On May 14, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ganqimaodu-Gashuunsukhait Railway, an important channel for energy cooperation between China and Mongolia and constructed by China Railway Construction Bridge Engineering Bureau, was held at the Ganqimaodu Port in Urat Zhongqi, Bayannur City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This is the second cross-border railway between China and Mongolia built nearly 70 years after the Erenhot-Zamyn-Uud Railway was completed and opened to traffic in 1956.

The China-Mongolia cross-border railway project is jointly promoted by the two countries. The section within China is invested and constructed by the State Energy Group, and the section within Mongolia is invested and constructed by the Tavan Tolgoi Railway Company. The two sides have specified that the cross-border railway will be "uniformly designed, separately constructed, and connected in one go". Starting from the Ganqimaodu Port in Bayannur City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the project exits the country, passes through the Gashuunsukhait Port in Mongolia, and connects to the Gashuunsukhait Station in South Gobi Province, Mongolia. The total length of the line is approximately 9.91 kilometers, and it is planned to be completed and opened to traffic in 2027.

The Ganquan Railway, the pre-project supporting project of this project, has been put into operation. After the project is completed, it will connect the Ganquan Railway with the southward railway in Mongolia. It is conducive to further expanding the scale of trade in the energy and resources field between the two countries, promoting infrastructure connectivity and economic and trade exchanges between the two countries along the line, driving the upgrading of various business forms such as cross-border logistics, industrial parks, and border trade services between China and Mongolia, and opening a new chapter of integrated development and mutually beneficial and win-win trade connectivity between China and Mongolia.
